Gender Representation in 'The Chase'

04:33:00 WOKMEDIA2017 0 Comments

In our AS product, we used a variety of techniques in order to show the status and power of gender in films. We researched certain theorists such as Angela McRobbie, who looked into the stereotypes of men and women in film. This included women being portrayed as weaker than men as well as being carers and mothers. We used these stereotypes in our film opening to make our characters more convincing as well use using the classic codes and conventions of horror films to shock and scare our audience. Our main protagonist was a young woman with a young daughter who we dressed in a floral blouse and casual skinny jeans in order to give the implication that she is simply doing her food shopping with the intention to return home after. Her clothes and light make up also demonstrated her innocence and vulnerability as our antagonist begins to follow her around the supermarket. By using every day locations, it makes the audience feel more threatened as they can relate to the storyline in how they live their lives everyday. We dressed our antagonist in more casual clothing, in trainers to give the impression of him being more athletic and proactive. This conforms to the stereotype men having more power and being more aggressive as we can immediately see that he has the intention to hurt our protagonist in some way, thus agreeing with McRobbie's perception of gender roles.
